Every so often the best looking man in the Retired Orangemen
Fantasy Football League goes to the movies (yes, just like the
rest of you).  Sometimes I go with one of my many lady friends.
Still other times I go with fellow ROFFL members.  After viewing
these movies, I form an opinion.  Here in a new column, exclusive
to retiredorangemen.com, is
Five Second Stare at the Movies.

Let the record show that I am not that big of a Bond guy.  I’ve watched
most of the 20 other James Bond movies.  “From Russia With Love,”
“Goldfinger,” and “You Only Live Twice” are my personal favorites (all of
which star Sean Connery as Bond).  Well, you can now officially include
“Casino Royale” into my list of top 3 (sorry “You Only Live Twice”).  The
movie is a perfect James Bond flick, over the top action, great looking
and exotic locations and gorgeous women (one of which overtook Rachel
McAdams as my #1 girl).

The film begins with Bond (played by Daniel Craig who instantaneously
became the 2nd best Bond ever) as he meets the necessary
requirements to become a double 0 agent.

After a bit of a falling out with his boss, ‘M’ (Dame Judi Dench), Bond
takes a trip to the Bahamas, where he has some suspicions about a
potential bomb maker.  It is here where we meet a few Bond regulars, the
gorgeous Italian woman (the smoking hot Caterina Murino) and the
gorgeous car (the 1964 Aston Martin).  The Bahamas though is just a
stopgap.  It leads directly to a great chase scene at Miami International
Aiport and indirectly to Montenegro for a high stakes game of Texas Hold
‘Em.

The main villain in the movie, Le Chiffre (played by Danish actor Mads
Mikkelsen, a perfect choice) has a bit of a debt problem and was able to
a set up a major game of Texas Hold ‘Em at the Casino Royale.  Ten
million dollars to buy in, five million to buy back in.  The British send in
their best card player, you guessed it, 007.

The woman in charge of Britain’s money is Vesper Lynd (played by my
new #1, Eva Green).  Vesper is a great addition to the list of Bond
women, in fact, she’s my favorite.  She displays a range in this movie that
most Bond women have not had the pleasure of showing.

For me, that’s the reason why this Bond movie is so much better than the
others.  I really enjoyed how the makers of this film choose to create a
romance between Bond and Vesper.  Their relationship explains why
Bond became the man he was in all the Connery and Brosnan films.  The
two actors share tremendous chemistry.

The film itself is a sight for the eyes.  The opening chase scene is
absolutely fantastic and Le Chiffre is a fitting addition to the legacy of
Bond villains.  As for Daniel Craig, he’s a perfect choice for James Bond.
He’s good looking, athletic, charismatic, and has the ability to show a
million emotions with his face (no other Bond could do that).

If the movie has a flaw it’s that it ran about 15 – 20 minutes too long.  But
for the first time in my life I can say, “I’m looking forward to the next James
Bond movie.”
