Only five weeks left in the regular season.
Before we get into this week’s edition. I just wanted to quickly mention the ‘keeper’ scandal of 2005. First off, I think
nobody believes Parker was trying to cheat. We all know Parker wouldn’t do that and dropping the player in
question before things got out of hand truly showed that. If he wanted to, he could have kept him and made an
arguable claim. Despite what many think, there were some that interpreted the rules the same way Parker did and
one who went in a completely different direction. Therein lies the problem, but I think it’s safe to say, the controversy
is over. No vote is needed now. It would have ended up being 10-3 anyway (you can guess who would have been
the three to side that the player could be kept again). Once again, Marc handled it democratically and I think it was
a good thing that it came up. Obviously there was some confusion. Our league is not perfect. There will be things
that Marc and his ‘brain trust’ doesn’t think of while planning. However, when the matter is cleared up in the off-
season, it will be because this happened.
Non-football random thoughts:
- Saw Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang. Liked it. The writer/director does action buddy movies better than anybody.
- Saw Kingdom of Heaven. Didn’t like it. But Ridley Scott is one heck of a director. Two shots come to mind that
are amazing.
- Also watched Kicking and Screaming. Horrible movie. Dave told me it was good. I no longer listen to Dave’s
recommendations (although he does LOVE Will Ferrell).
- Theo Epstein is either the stupidest man on the face of the earth or the most prideful man ever to walk away
with his dignity. Maybe both. His new job is to help turn around the Brock’s Bandits. But if he can’t work for
Larry Luchinno, what makes him think he can work for Chris Brockman.
- NBA season is upon us. Thanks to the few that joined. One question runs throughout the fantasy basketball
league? Where’s Jason Sherman?
- One last interesting note that interests only me. I finally made the famous Chris Brockman IM more info page.
If you click on his screen name to get more info, you will find my moderately amusing quote comparing Brock
to Ray Lewis.
Back to football:
- Navid’s team looks the best right now. If he repeats, he would be like the Patriots during the salary cap era.
- Scott needs Bulger back; otherwise he’s ONLY got a playoff team.
- Brock’s team suddenly doesn’t look as scary as it did 3 weeks ago. Holt’s a big key, but a lot of his players
are not playing their best right now.
- The two scariest teams right now are Jay Cantor’s and Jarrett’s. You never know what to expect out of them.
They could throw up 130+ on you any week. I’d be afraid to play either one in the playoffs.
- Jarrett has one of the most balanced teams right now. You suffered a tough loss buddy. I’ve been on your
end, losing while putting up 130 points, and it’s frustrating. You would have beaten some other team by
double.
The unintentionally hilarious (to borrow from Bill Simmons) quote of the week came from Jarrett’s smack talk for
Sunday and Monday. He wrote “Fuck, Didn’t Lukin have Miller too, he killed me”. Now, Lukin did have Health Miller
during week one and two. Problem is Jarrett didn’t play Lukin in either of those weeks. What’s more interesting is
Jarrett’s opponent for this week is none other than Josh Lukin. So, my question is, “where does the smack talk
comment come from”. It just doesn’t make any sense. It’s hilarious.
- Marc you need to plan better during draft. You can’t put yourself in the position of having to pretty much
forfeit two weeks when all your star players are on the bye.
- The two teams that need to make a change are Gregg and Josh. Both have talented teams that could
contend, but are reliant on some inconsistent performers. Josh just made a move. If it’s possible, the Daunte
injury could be the best thing that happens to his team. Now, look for Gregg to make a trade.
- Dave is too reliant on the New York Giants. But he’s the first man to take down Scotty Wats. Not an easy task
when you consider Scott has beaten 3 ex-champs and a commish (that should be a song or movie title).
Good luck this week Number one.
- The two most surprising teams are Parker and Nick. Nick has quietly won 3 of his last 4 to come back from a
horrid 0-4 start to find his team 3-5 and in the playoff hunt. He needs to win out b/c if he gets into a point
race, he won’t have enough. Parker just keeps taking chances to make his team better, despite the injuries
and he sits 3-5 as well; on the cusp of the 8th spot.
- Rich has one of the toughest remaining schedules. All his opponents are at least .500
- Who has the best looking schedule. Navid who faces 3 sub .500 opponents. Also, Jay Cantor who also has 3
sub .500 opponents and is the only man to have matchup’s against both Nick and Jason remaining.
- Jason, it takes a confident man to have faith in your team despite being way overmatched. Bold prediction
even though you lost.
Lastly, a quick show of respect for Marc and Jay. At the eight-week point in the season, only the three of us have
continued to write our weekly columns. Despite all our outside responsibilities and hobbies (and trying to make the
playoffs), we set aside time each week in our busy schedules to write for all of your enjoyment. While I’m sure many
appreciate it, it often goes unsaid.
And finally, a quick congratulations to Gregg Moore who, if my sources are correct, is getting married this weekend.
Good luck and I wish the best for you two.
