ONE WEEK DOWN, TWELVE TO GO.
Half the league members are happy, confident, with thoughts of playoffs dancing in their head. The other half are
depressed, suicidal, and bewildered. Being one of those in the latter half, I can tell you that it’s not a good feeling.
Especially when you throw on top of that, the following events happening to me this past weekend:
- Another blowout defeat in my other serious fantasy football league. I had Hasselbeck, Roy Williams, Chambers,
Cadillac, LaMont, and Cooley. Yep, looks good on paper, looks bad on the statsheet.
- The possible loss of Roy Halladay in one of my serious roto fantasy baseball leagues – I am in first place by the
way and in need of wins.
- A rough first day in my semi-final matchup in a head to head fantasy baseball league (run by everyone’s
favorite, Jason Rose) – John Smoltz you suck. How do you let up 6 runs in 2 innings to the Chicago Cubs?
- Oh yea, and somebody hit my car on Friday afternoon. There goes my bumper.
(Yep, it’s been a rough weekend in fantasy and reality, but back to what I was saying)
Of course, we all want to get off to a good start. 1-0 sounds much better than 0-1. Yet, it’s still early and the losers of
the first week are trying to tell themselves it’s a marathon, not a sprint. That one loss is not the end of the world. While
all that may be true, this is not baseball or basketball. There are only 12 more weeks to correct the problems, to fix
the sinking ship so to speak. So we are left to wonder what happened. Bad draft? Our studs turning into duds?
Sleepers and breakout players failing to live up to the hype? So we actively attack the waiver wire. Which leads me to
the title of this article.
FRISMAN JACKSON:
Look it up in the dictionary and you’ll fine the following definition: A tease. A one week wonder. A fluke.
The man practically speaks for an entire group of fantasy players. We’ve all heard of this player. Some of us have
picked up such a player. Others stay away because we know it’s another classic example of a Frisman Jackson.
Since the draft a total of 45 free agent pick ups have occurred, 24 of those have occurred since the start of the
season. Who has Frisman Jackson written all over him? How about Jericho Cotchery? Yep, sounds about right to me.
Before I run through some initial thoughts of each team, I would like to apologize to Nick Serrano. Yes, I took control of
his team while he was sick this weekend. That is why his team sucked. Basically, everything I touch loses. For those of
you that read my draft analysis, just do the opposite of what I said.
I am also now accepting requests for random topics to write. So far, I received one from Jason that I am planning out. I’
ve also received a request from our commissioner to start a blog. I have no idea what to write about, so that one is
still up in the air. If you have any thoughts, please feel free to email me. I’m still waiting. I check byeung@roffl.com
everyday. Nothing.
WEEK ONE THOUGHTS:
Nomads in the Deep: He was vulnerable. No Steve Smith. Larry Johnson didn’t look good. Thank god he played the
worst GM since Isiah Thomas. If there was any week to take out the defending champ, this was it. But like they say,
champions know how to win even when they aren’t playing their best.
New Jersey Jacobins: An impressive victory for Dave picking up where he left off last year. However, all is not bright
for the future principal of Paramus High School in New Jersey. Oakland looks terrible, and I wouldn’t feel too happy
with Randy Moss right now. Joe Jurevicius is out 4-6 weeks and Dave is trotting out a WR core almost as pathetic as
Dorfman’s (Wait, my team is Dorfman? Crap). Good thing he plays my crappy team this week. Good luck Alec Baldwin.
Brock’s Bandits: Another team that didn’t look that good, but was fortunate enough to play somebody who couldn’t
even look at his team due to sickness. Brady was worse than Charlie Frye, Watson was ok, but now that Branch is
gone for good, they’ll buckle down and figure this passing thing out.
Labor power: I joked to Nick over text message that I dropped Jake Delhomme for Alex Smith, because it was easier to
spell. Who would have guessed that the move would have actually been beneficial? Tough week for Nick and I’m not
even talking about fantasy football. Hopefully he’s feeling better now. Also, hopefully Kevin Jones becomes a stud and
beats each and every one of you from here on out. Just so all of you who turned down my offers or didn’t even bother
to respond to my emails, will regret it.
OC Beach Ballers: Funny how this fantasy game works. Everyone thought Scott had a great draft and a great team.
Yet some really bad weeks for his players sealed his first week fate. Both of his QB’s were atrocious, LaMont is on a
terrible team that kills his value, but things will brighten up for the baller. He’ll bounceback, but you can already forget
about a repeat of that 2005 season.
Dorfman: Steven Jackson or Tiki Barber? I was almost certain I would take Jackson with the #1 pick next year, but Tiki
does look good. Ah, the decisions…
Nose: A good start for Jarrett, much like last year. However, there are reasons for concern. Palmer didn’t look good
against an average KC defense and Cincy has the hardest schedule (tied with Giants). He better hope TJ comes
back soon (Rich does too). Stallworth could be the steal of the draft, but I still don’t want to get too excited about a
perennial underachiever.
Fighting Blue Crab: Gregg’s strategy (much to my dismay) sounds good. The question is can he wait that long? What
if he continues to lose these games while he runs out a backup RB as his #2? I mean he doesn’t get to play me until
week 9, which is when we all know DeShaun Foster will get hurt reaching for a glass of water and DeAngelo will step
in and run for a record 319 yards and 6 TD’s. Heck, even I’m looking forward to seeing that come true.
Five Second Stare: Another man with a plan that didn’t quite pan out. Still too early to tell, but an 0-fer from Galloway
is not the kind of production you want from a keeper, and I bet Frank Gore is looking much sexier than Reuben
Droughns at the moment. But expect Five Second to win the staring contest in the end. Benson actually played (even
if it was scrub time), Vernon Davis looked good (more importantly Alex Smith looked good), and Deuce McCallister got
a solid 22 carries and 90 good yards. Expect to see some Fred Taylor this week, but we’ll have to wait and see what
kind of effect Deion Branch will have on Burleson’s production. Did anybody mention that Jay’s keepers were bad?
Canton FC: You know what, I can never tell if Josh is complementing me or taking a subtle jab at me. I guess Jay said
it best in his profile; Josh is one of the best at making fun of you without you knowing. However, he must get some
credit for Wesley Welker (although Navid did have him the past two years, so it shouldn’t be that much of a surprise).
Reggie Bush looks worth an early round draft pick thanks to all the ways he can produce, and will make for a studly
keeper in the coming years. Josh may be sitting atop the standings now, but it’s a little skewed. I mean Hasselbeck,
Mason, McGahee, and Kennison did not play well. He got a ton of points from his defense, kicker, and Welker. I don’t
know if you can expect that week in and week out, although, you also can’t expect his star players to perform so
poorly.
Inching Worms: A very balanced effort for Parker’s team. I expect to see his team produce similar stats week in and
week out. He may not get too many 160 point weeks, but he also won’t get too many sub-100 week’s either. That
Tatum Bell pick might really pan out if the injury to Mike Bell requires surgery. I’m not sold on Edge still, despite his
decent stats. I mean he rushed for a 2.8 YPC against the 49ers and he had to work hard for those yards. I think
Parker’s team will be nicely set up for the long run. His bench has potential in the later weeks.
Baltimore Tools: The commish gets a big win and is already declaring his draft a success. Good news is Portis played,
but I see a lot of these 10 carries for 39-yard games this year as his shoulder injury lingers. Chester Taylor looks like
the real deal, but only 88 yards on 31 carries? The Chicago Defense pick is looking good, because they get to play
Green Bay one more time. Roy Williams will be fine (just maybe not this week), Detroit is going to be a hard team to
play against each week and the offense will figure it out eventually. I’m banking on a return to the playoffs for Marc as
his even/odd year trend continues.
Born To Run My Mouth: Tough week for Rich Kiss as receivers played with his emotions, but that pickup of Marques
Colston looks pretty good. The guy has WR/TE eligibility. There was a guy last year that had multiple eligibility
(RB/TE) and ended up having a breakout year. His name was Chris Cooley. Tough week for his RB’s, but they’ll be
fine. On the other hand, Rich’s WR core is in bad shape especially if he doesn’t get TJ back this week.
Shermtanks: I love how Jason is always so confident at the beginning of the season. It just makes it so much more fun
to track and follow his slow descent back to self-loathing as the season goes along. Good start for the toilet bowl
winner (btw, I don’t think people are saying this enough. Jason needs daily reminders that he has the toilet bowl). His
RB’s are probably the best in the league. Some people would kill to have Willie Parker as their number 1. As a matter
of fact, watch out for Nick Serrano. The man is on the prowl. The fact that Troy Williamson also returns kicks is a big
plus, but like I said in my brilliant draft analysis; Bledsoe is a big risk to ride as your number one QB and Javon Walker
is a few weeks away (although his bad start could also be attributed to Plummer). Sadly, much to the dismay of the
league, Jason looks headed for the playoffs again.
GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE IN WEEK TWO
