Week one is always the hardest to write. It’s just one week. You can’t really determine much. There is still a lot of season left to play. The
best you can do is try and not overreact. And I can’t do rankings or predictions. So where does that leave me. Basically, just me making up a
bunch of crap. So, here goes:
The first week is always one of the most active waiver wire weeks of the year. Basically, if a player catches a TD or is a backup to a RB, he’s
getting picked up. Here’s a brief recap of who was picked up and what I think of them.
- Kenton Keith – quickly, and quite hysterically, picked up by Brock the second Joseph Addai limped off the field. I don’t question the
pickup. I just love how fast he was picked up. As Jason said to me when I texted him about this, “The season has officially begun.” I
think he’s a nice insurance guy to have, b/c Addai could get hurt and he is the backup. And even if Addai is fine, Keith will send get a
few carries here and there.
- Roddy White – as Josh predicted (specifically for me) the Atlanta receivers will be very popular on the waiver wire. Mainly because
you have no idea which receiver will get the looks week in and week out.
- Jason Avant – Navid is quick on the ball. I’m not reading much into Avant’s TD, and think Reggie Brown and Kevin Curtis will play
better in the future. But you never know. The Philly receivers were a question mark going into the season. What’s more scary is how
immobile McNabb looked.
- Dennis Northcutt – I had my eye on him going into the draft, b/c I thought he was the best receiver in Jacksonville (which isn’t saying
much). He played pretty well in week one, but don’t expect anything great from him. The passing attack in Jacksonville is nothing
special.
- Earnest Graham – with Cadillac going down, and Michael Pittman already hurting, Nick picked up the other Tampa Bay RB. Can’t be
too safe, right? People laughed when Nick Goings was picked up.
- Shaun McDonald – came out of nowhere to catch a TD. People are already calling him this year’s Mike Furrey (who didn’t do anything
in the game). If that’s true, then he could be a nice pickup. But it remains to be seen, since Furrey isn’t going to be forgotten and they
still have Roy Williams and Calvin Johnson. Plus Kevin Jones is coming back soon (he catches a lot of passes).
- Derrick Ward – possibly the pickup of week one. Brandon Jacobs injury is big news and it looks like Ward, not Droughns, will get the
carries Ward did pretty well against the Cowboys and could be a nice short term play. (btw, did anybody have a better week than Jay.
Chester Taylor gets hurt. Jay has Adrian Peterson. Cadillac gets hurt. Jay has Michael Pittman. And on top of that, Jay picks up Ward.
I know Jay did the work in drafting these guys and being quick to the waiver wire, but there is a degree of luck here and Jay just
seems to have it going his way.)
- Green Bay DEF – I said at the draft and I’ll say it now. Parker keeps taking my guys. I may have to make my visit to LA in a couple of
weeks an assassination attempt, instead of a vacation. In all seriousness, Green Bay has a very young and rising defense and will
finish the season in the top 10. I really like the linebacker core.
- Indianapolis DEF – was week one a fluke? I hope not.
- Steve McNair – Eli goes down, Jarrett picks up an insurance policy (who then also goes down with an injury). But on the brightside,
Matt Leinart sucked.
- Demetrius Williams – a sleeper WR who I also had my eye on. There was good buzz coming out of camp and Clayton is still getting
over his injury. Could be a good pickup.
- Marcus Pollard – Scott’s quest for a TE (and for the transaction record) continues.
- Bobby Engram – Apparently, DJ Hackett is not the definite #2 guy on Seattle. There is still a lot to be determined with the Seattle
receivers (Branch didn’t get one catch. Poor Parker).
- Brandon Stokely – One Brandon will be the #2 guy in Denver. It looks like Marshall will be that guy, but I wouldn’t discount Stokely.
Could be a solid pickup. (PS – The Devin Hester hype sure went downhill in a hurry).
- Cincinnati DEF – they sure looked pretty good against the Ravens. Either that or the ineptitude of the Ravens offense made the Cincy
D look really good.
- Musa Smith – maybe I was a little too quick to comment about Gregg’s final draft choice. I am surprised that McGahee didn’t get the
ball in the red zone.
- Josh McCown – a pretty impressive stat line. Ronald Curry could be the real deal. And I wouldn’t worry about Russell; he’s not playing
this year.
- Ron Dayne – Nick’s quest to find two RB’s, who won’t get injured, continues.
- David Garrard – he has to be better than Leftwich, right? He’s at least better than the backup Rich had previously (which was nobody).
That’s it? You guys are really slacking. What, nobody wants Sam Hurd or Roscoe Parrish?
Going into the season, there are a few guys I just hope do well. I know they make millions and shouldn’t get my pity. But I feel bad for these
guys and how they are treated by the fans and media. So here are guys I am rooting for this year.
- Joey Harrington – Is it really his fault he got drafted by the Detroit Lions? He seems like a nice guy who is making the most of his
opportunities. He appears to be fairly humble and shows humility about his past failures. Plus he plays classical piano. What’s not to
root for?
- Chad Pennington – He gave his right arm to the Jets and what does he get in return? He takes a paycut and what does he get in
return? He has to constantly look over his shoulder at the guys trying to take his job and there are always the critics. But the guy is a
proven leader. One of the most intelligent players in the league (they let him call his own plays). And an all around nice guy. (PS – it
was disgraceful how the fans cheered the fact that he got hurt)
- Trent Green – I know that makes 3 QB’s, but Green has always been underrated. He had a golden opportunity to play in St. Louis, but
got injured in the preseason and watched from the sidelines as Kurt Warner emerged out of nowhere. He played spectacularly for five
years at Kansas City, but got a concussion and was run out of town. And when he was run out of town, the Chiefs refused to make a
quick deal to the Dolphins, instead holding him up for a late round draft pick. So here’s hoping he has one great year left in him, to
prove to everyone that he’s not done.
- Joe Gibbs – Some fans are too young to remember what kind of coach this guy was in the 80’s. But he was the first man to guide a
black quarterback to the Super Bowl. Do you realize he won Super Bowls with Mark Rypien and Doug Williams as his QB? His legacy
and his legendary status deserve better than this. He deserves one final run to glory. And I hope he gets it.
Guys not to root for.
- Leonard Little – A piece of garbage human being if I ever saw one.
- Tiki Barber – I cannot stand him. Somebody please shut him up. Just because he can read, doesn’t mean he is smarter than
everybody. He almost makes me hate Ronde, just by association and appearance.
OK, I really ran out of ideas, so how about we do some ROFFL Trivia. Answers can be sent to me via email. The winner will be announced in
next week’s article. Person who gets the most correct wins something yet to be determined.
ROFFL Trivia
- VA Chris is not a member of this league, yet has attended draft weekend more than four current league members. Name those four
league members.

not attend Syracuse. Name them and their respective schools.
