With the season more than halfway to the absolute end (sniff), I thought I share with you my goals for this season:
- Be named owner of the week on the Brockcast.
- Beat Scott Watson (I’m talking in the playoffs)
- Be considered ‘hot’ on WGLPT
- Have Nick tell me he liked my column.
- Go 7-0 on Yahoo predictions one week.
- Post something on the message board that causes everyone to post.
- Be voted owner of the year.
- Win the Gregg Moore Trophy.
By the end of the season, I fully expect to be 8 for 8 on all those goals.
I’m running out of new things to say…
- The message board is starting to liven up a bit thanks to Marc’s efforts to create a discussion topic each day. However, I’m wondering if anybody
ever writes something. Reads what they just wrote. Decides it’s stupid or not funny and then deletes it. I only ask because I find myself doing that
all the time. Especially when it comes to smack talk.
- Happy belated birthday to Richard Kiss. Hope you all remembered.
- On a related note, apparently October is a big b’day month. We have three October b’day’s in this league alone (Dave, Parker, and Rich). My
dad was born in October (Happy Birthday Dad). My college roommate, an old high school friend, and another good friend were also born in
October (the latter two celebrate theirs on Halloween).
- Welcome back Jay. Nice to see a new WGLPT article on the site.
- Notice the entire buzz around Jay’s return. I think I should take a break, so you all can miss me and this column.
- The 2008-09 Retired Orangemen League (ROL?) subgroup known as the Fantasy Basketball League (is that what you meant Marc?) is
underway. The draft went quickly, with most teams (including myself) not showing up. We are 14 deep this year, so depth is an issue for all
teams. I ended up with three Philly 76ers (Brand, Igoudala, and A. Miller). That’s two too many 76ers in my book.
- My sleeper picks for the year: Wilson Chandler, Marc Gasol, and Kelenna Azubuike.
- What’s everyone doing for Halloween? Is there a costume to be made related to fantasy football?
- Football. Central Park. Sunday.
- Wait, isn’t the NYC marathon this Sunday?
- Football. Central Park. Next Sunday.
- Question: Now that Rich Kiss is engaged, will he send news of his accomplishment to the seasonal Syracuse University Magazine and have it
posted in the ‘Class Notes’ section. In case Rich does not know where to send his note, allow me to be of assistance.

After eight weeks of analysis, I can safely say the following with 20/20 hindsight.
- Out with the old WR’s (Holt, Harrison, Moss, T.O., Chad) and in with the new WR’s (Greg Jennings, Roddy White, Brandon Marshall, Andre
Johnson, Calvin Johnson).
- There is only one top tier TE and his name is Jason Witten. Everyone else is indistinguishable. Stat wise there is no big difference between
Visanthe Shiancoe and Kellen Winslow.
- Sleeper WR’s are always easiest to find: Steve Breaston, Greg Camarillo, Matt Jones, Josh Morgan, Nate Washington, Mike Walker, Rashied
Davis, Chansi Stuckey, and any New Orleans WR not named Marques Colston.
- Injured players out for the start of the season do not return to become effective fantasy players (Bobby Ingram, Deion Branch, and Kevin Curtis).
- Suspended players are still worth a first round draft pick (Brandon Marshall and Steve Smith) and should not be downgraded.
Biggest Surprises:
Kyle Orton
Chad Pennington
Aaron Rodgers
Ronnie Brown
Santana Moss
Matt Jones
Warrick Dunn
Dave Allocco (wait, we were only talking about real players).
Moves that worked out.
- Jarrett choosing to keep Steve Smith over Torry Holt.
- Navid picking Brandon Marshall with his first pick.
No need to thank me, I just care about you and your teams:
Scott Watson – Rumor has it that the first edition of the playoff preview will appear next week. But it’s pretty much a certainty that Scott will be returning
to the playoffs. However, look for the current first place team owner to make some moves for the playoff run. Scott has some good depth to work with on
his bench. And Calvin has proven that defenses can focus all they want on him; he’ll still get his TD’s. Although, I’m not too sure about bringing in
Culpepper. The guy is finished.
Jason Sherman – Good game champ (ROFBL champ I mean). I got lucky to have faced you with your studs on the bye (Cutler, Forte). But it was nice to
see Tomlinson return to his #1 draft pick self. Hopefully, Tomlinson can maintain this production and it won’t be another Larry Johnson (one good
game, followed by two bad games) – sorry Marc.
David Allocco – It’s been a weird season for fantasy QB’s. Palmer, Roethlisberger, and D. Andersen were all top 10 pre-season ranked QB’s who have
been busts. But Orton, Pennington, and Ryan have shocked the fantasy world. Orton may be the best of them thanks to the high powered Chicago
offense (and I’m not being sarcastic). Sure it helps to play the Lions twice. But Dave truly has a balanced team. Witten, Andre Johnson, Marion Barber.
Not many people can put up a threesome to match that.
Navid Sadri – Rumor has it that the two time champion is this week’s guest on the Brockcast. I’m excited. Rumor also has it that Navid has been working
with a trainer in preparation for our first touch football game in Central Park.
Christopher Brockman – Is there any question that Brock’s team is the ROFFL equivalent of the New England Patriots. Both are still in the playoff hunt,
with five wins, but they both could easily be under .500. Give the man some credit though. Quick question: Can we start calling Chris the Bill Belichick of
our league? If we do, will he start to wear a New England hoody every game day?
Richard Kiss – So far Rich is undefeated after announcing his engagement. This is good to know in case of any future engagement announcements
(not that there will be any, just saying). Although, imagine if someone believed that there was a direct relationship between becoming engaged and
winning in fantasy football. Does that not have the makings of a great romantic comedy starring Dane Cook? The main character could go through
fifteen girls and fifteen engagements (thus having a 13-0 record and winning the first two rounds of the playoffs). And then in a climactic ending, he will
have to choose between the one he truly loves and winning the championship trophy. What a brilliant idea? Sometimes I amaze myself. Don’t lie, you
know you’d watch.
Jarrett Blass – Where are you this season? You know it’s ok to talk or post a message. Since you probably won’t respond, I’ll assume it’s because you
are busy with wedding plans and work. So we’ll give you pass for now.
Nick Serrano – I wonder how much time he spent to write his poem and to think of Halloween costumes for everybody. Anyway, in case anybody hasn’t
noticed, Nick is at .500 and holding down the last playoff spot. And that is without his best player, Reggie Wayne, putting up typical numbers. I’d be
scared of Nick’s team right now.
Parker Deay – But I’d be even more scared of Parker’s team. Does this not remind anybody of last season? Do you really think Parker won’t try and
make one or two big moves near the trade deadline to complete his already competitive squad? Do you all realize that it’s the same situation as last
year, except now he already has a legitimate fantasy QB in McNabb.
Josh Lukin – A very big matchup this week between Josh and I. Two 3-5 teams, who could be looking at a playoff or a lottery ticket with a win or loss this
week. I think it will be a tough matchup. We are both catching each other at a time when our rosters are not at their best. So good luck to you Josh. May
the best team win!
Marc Epstein – Can one person hate his #1 draft pick anymore than Marc hates his? Who is the better fantasy play at QB – Trent Edwards or Chad
Pennington? Santana Moss – top five steal of the draft. Larry Johnson – top five bust of the draft. The biggest reason we can’t play football in Central
Park on Sunday…Marc is never in town? How many weddings do you go to man? Stop making so many friends. We are in a recession and wedding
gifts are expensive.
Christopher Rosenthall – You can’t blame the man for not trying. We all thought he had arguably the best keepers going into the draft, but sometimes
things don’t pan out like you’d planned. Peyton looks to be headed for one of his worst statistical seasons ever (although I still think he’s headed for a
strong finish). T.O. needs Romo more than he needs a hug. But I’m looking forward to Chris making his first ever ROFFL trade. And his next week
matchup against Jay Cantor will have the most smack talk by far.
Jay Cantor – At least for one more year, no team will go winless. Now the question will be can Jay win one more game, thus avoiding becoming only the
second team in ROFFL history to win only one game (Team Whiskey N’ Rye owned by Scott Tilles). I’ll be honest, I’m just glad I already played Jay’s
team. He could play the role of spoiler. His team is not a 1-7 team.
Good luck to everyone this week. Happy Halloween!!!
