In honor of Jason Sherman, I now present you with the Random Thoughts segment of Tank Trends:
Stock UP:
Fighting Blue Crab – The hottest team in the league right now. Only a few weeks ago, his team was left for dead and people (namely me) were calling
his team a front runner for the toilet bowl. But a four game winning streak later and the rookie is right back in the thick of the playoff race. Led by the
resurgent (and finally healthy) Peyton Manning, don’t count this rookie out. Otherwise, he could do a repeat of what the first rookie in this league
did…that’s win the championship
Soaring Pigs – The defending champ was in a precarious position only a few weeks ago. On the wrong side of the rankings looking at a trip back to the
lottery, now the inaugural Gregg Moore trophy winner is on a two game winning streak and in the hunt for one of the final playoff spots. Joseph Addai is
back and has a cupcake schedule the rest of the way. And American Dad was renewed for another season.
Trades – The league saw five trades the last few weeks heading into the trade deadline. And a lot more trade talk was done amongst the league
owners. This is great for the league and I love to see the gambles that some of the people are taking. I hope this makes some of the other league
owners take notice and maybe make them be more willing to trade.
The Message Board – Thanks to the daily(ish) discussion topics posted by Marc and Parker, as well as the recent talk about playing football in central
park and politics, has led to a semi-resurgence on the message board. Sure it’s not at the prolific levels of a few years back, but it’s better than it was at
the beginning of the season.
MLB Free Agents – The Yankees are choosing to spend their millions on overpriced talent instead of the usual…firewood and toilet paper. And I
thought we were in a recession.
James Bond - $67.5M on opening week and another $252M overseas!!! I haven’t seen Quantum of Solace, but I loved Casino Royale. I just hope the
movie doesn’t suck, although I have heard only decent reviews from everyone (all saying not as good as Casino). I still plan on seeing it; I just hope it
doesn’t ruin the goodwill that it received from the first Daniel Craig movie.
Stock DOWN:
DoubleGG – the former first place team (and eight game winning streak holder) is now on a two game losing streak and in a three way tie for best
record. The trade has worked out in Coffeon3rd’s favor so far as MJD has outplayed Colston and outscored him five TD’s to zero in two games.
Five Second State – After having a victory taken away from him, the two-time champ lost a big matchup against VA and appears headed for the toilet
bowl unless Jarrett’s team totally implodes.
Nose – The coldest team in the league has practically played himself out of the playoff race with a five game losing streak. But on the bright side,
Jarrett was pretty good on the podcast.
Colt 45 Bandits – He’s lost four in a row. His playoff hopes are in jeopardy. And he’s having a very difficult time getting his last two guests on to his
podcast: Jason and Josh. Guys if you’re reading this, please call Brock when you have some free time.
Football in Central Park – We keep trying to play, but it just never happens. Looks like Jay and Brian Sherman are down for Saturday, but is anybody
else going to show up? What about the annual Turkey Bowl? NYE??
First Round Draft Picks – Tom Brady, Larry Johnson, Willie Parker, Chad Johnson, Jamal Lewis, Darren McFadden, Willis McGahee, Torry Holt,
Earnest Graham, Plaxico Burress, and Santonio Holmes. Those are the first round draft picks that have not played up to their draft status. That’s 11 out
of 14 (79%). Makes you think twice going into next year’s draft.
I would do something in honor of Mouthing ROFF and Five Things I Think I Know, but I’ll save those for another time.
Not to steal Scott’s thunder here, but as one of the teams sweating it out the last few weeks, I just need to say that I don’t recall a time when so many
teams were four, five, and six win teams. I also don’t recall a time when there wasn’t one team with a clear cut chance at ten wins. I’m sure Jason, Dave,
and/or Scott will get to that coveted double digit win total. But if they don’t, then we may see a 6-7 team that doesn’t make the playoffs. Let’s just
assume that Jason, Scott, Dave, Navid, Rich, and Nick are in the playoffs since they all have six wins or more already. That means there are two spots
left for the teams with four and five wins. I would really hate to be one of those teams. Unfortunately I am.
So with the playoffs coming soon and the top 3-6 teams looking forward to their first round matchup, here are the teams everyone
should fear in the first round.
fair trade – Thigpen, Wayne, TJ, Jacobs…you’d be hard pressed to find a top four as good as this.
Soaring Pigs – Defending Champ. Addai is back. Now if he can only get Westbrook and Addai on the same page.
Fighting Blue Crab – Winner of four straight. Peyton is back. T.O., White, and J. Lewis could all throw up points on the right opponent.
Lastly, because Dave made his plea to be owner of the year, I thought I’d chime in with my ‘Owner of the year’ finalists.
Dave – See message board post.
Rich Kiss – Per Rich himself, “Put this in your next column: one keeper (Tony Romo) has missed a month, the other (TJ Houshmandzadeh) is traded
away and my number one pick (Darren McFadden) has been worthless and I’m 5-4 (now 6-5)…not bad, eh?” I’ll add this too – and Shockey has been
hurt. Rich has basically done this with great waiver wire pickups like Warner, McClain, and Bryant.
Scott – Tied for best record. Held the top spot for most of the season. Eight game winning streak was the longest of the year.
Jason – Tied for best record. Most points in the league. And he had arguably the best draft.
Darkhorse candidate: Chris Rosenthall – It’s always hard to be a rookie. Even harder to persevere and continue on when you’re staring at a losing
record and possibly the toilet bowl midway through the season. But like I said, he’s the hottest team right now and a team everyone should be afraid of.
If he makes the playoffs, he definitely has a case as a sleeper pick.
That’s all I got this week. Good luck everyone.
