Talk about making a statement in Week 1. Last year just five teams broke the 140 point barrier once, and only two teams did it twice, AND
none of those games came before week 3. I’m a little shocked that with one minor rule change over the off-season (a rule change that
made it HARDER to get points) we had two teams cross the mark and another three come very close. Boy oh boy, it’s going to be a good
season…
… for some.
While more than half the league jumped over the century mark, six were left in the dust, including four who failed to even pass 90 points.
Does week one prove that there is a disparity in the league? And if so, will those dominate eight – 5SS, BushMaroney, MD Fighting Blue
Crabs, NJ Jacobins, Born2Run, Next Google, Bandit’s and Nose – be the ones headed into the playoffs?
Let’s take a look inside an amazing week 1…
BURRESS KNOCKS THE TOOLS OUT EARLY INTO THE EVENING
I recall sitting inside Blondies (a local bar on the upper east side of Manhattan) one Monday night. I had met Scott there earlier and we had
both been seated in a nice part of the upstairs dinning hall. We were a few beers in when Monday Night Football began. This was a big
game for the Giants and a big game for me – up a mere 11 going into the game, I had no one going but my opponent had one: Plaxico
Burress. After a few plays, my stress level diminished: If he had a cold night, I was ok. Then Eli decided that he needed to make a
statement. One pass and catch later, Plaxico was in the endzone with a 60+ yard reception. This was a few years ago. But it could have
easily been Sunday night. Plaxico only needed a few, but he got a lot. Sigh. Congrats Jay on winning the 2007 Jew Bowl and taking a 3-2
lead in the "series."
RANDOM FAILS TO SHOW UP AND PUT UP
Looking at Brian’s team you think: How the f* did he only manage 74 points? I mean there is Rivers, Chambers, Calvin, Steven, Ronnie and
America’s Defense. What’s Brian’s team going to do when they finally decided to play? As for Dave, he proved that his team could post
solid numbers, with Henry and Barber combining for 28 and his WR’s combining for 50+. If the Miami D can stay tough (and they are
getting kinda old), the Jacobins may not end up on the Toilet Bowl after all (DAVE’S PREDICTION, NOT MINE!)
MADDEN CURSE WEEK 1 UPDATE: MILD
Vince looked good, but not great. At least he wasn’t hurt – the Madden Curse seems to only be affecting anti-trust’s running backs at this
point (bye bye Brandon Jacobs; how injured IS Cadillac?). Lucky for Nick that Reggie Wayne and Antonio Gates exploded to give him a
respectable 90+ points. Sadly for Nick, Brock was in his “we only draft winners” form: Keeper Brady connected with Moss for his biggest
day ever and an ENORMOUS 58 point combined showing. By the time he tacked on the 29 points from his D, he had destroyed Serrano.
BUSHMARONEY? MORE LIKE PALMERRANDELEL
Ok, so the namesake Bush\Maroney only pulled in a combined 11 points. So what? This is JOSH. And JOSH has NEVER lost Week 1. He
also hasn’t had a sub 100 point game in Week 1 in the last three years. Why should 2007’s Week 1 be any different? It wasn’t. Sure he
looked slow early, but Sherman’s mere lead of 40.13 going into the late games Sunday night wasn’t strong. LT certainly did his part: Unable
to get the ball into the end zone with his feet, he threw one. And THEN ran one in! His 24.74 was a clear indication that LT is a team
MAKER! But the points weren’t enough. By the time Palmer, Mason, Stover, and the Baltimore D took the field Monday night, it was clear
that Josh was going to do his Josh thing. Monday night doubled his Thurs/Sunday points and gave him something no one else has: A 6-0
record in Week 1.
GAME OF THE WEEK – I THINK I CALLED THIS ONE!
Didn’t I say this was going to be good one? Can I get a little pat on the back? Scott: Delhomme (28), Coles (22), Welker (16) and the SD D
(22) was unreal. Born2Run: White (8) was unrealler. Why point out White? Cause he was the only Run’ner to score in single digits. Rich –
This team may be what you think it’s going to be. Although I’m not sure if you can hang your hat on a 40+ game from Romo every week…
Hey, a man can dream, right?
NOMADS WR DOMINACE COMES TO AN END; NOSE’S BEGINS
Remember the days of Steve Smith killing us all on behalf of the Nomads? Those days appear to be Nose's now and the Nomads days of
Braylon Edwards (4.2) and Eddie Kennison (0.33) appear to just be starting! Of course you can’t bash Nomads to much: His one-two
combo of Gore/Johnson is still good for a solid 24 points per game. Tack on Bulger and Walker and he’s maybe one piece of the puzzle
short. That puzzle solved looks like Nose as he truly dominated with the best performance of the week: Manning with 36 (but is he out for
the next month?), a new elite WR core of Holt/Boldin/Smith (51) and the Seattle D (22). Could it be all Nose this year?
PARKER STARTS 0-1; COULD A 4TH YEAR OF PLAYOFF MISSING BE IN THE FUTURE?
I’m really pulling for Deay this year. He hasn’t been to the playoff’s in the last three seasons and the man puts so much heart into his
teams. Then again, he did play the Raiders D… Parker struggled in Week 1, no thanks to Deion Branch (0), Owen Daniels (1.93) and the
aforementioned Oak D (4). There were shining moments – Jay Cutler proved he can play (18), Harrison hasn’t aged a bit (15) and the
Addai/Westbrook combo seems to be working (32). But it was Gregg’s team who impressed: After taking a lot of sh*t in the “press” since
the draft, his team joined the elite 100+ point ranks. Sure, Manning\Johnson\Owens accounted for 67% of his final total (and the only three
to go into double digits). But Gregg’s team did what we expected: They didn’t impress, but they were good enough to get the victory.
Best of luck to everyone this week.
Swami, a horrific 1-6 this week, will be have predictions entered by the Saturday night
